About HarmonEssence A Cappella Chorus

HarmonEssence is an exciting, award-winning show chorus performing four-part harmony, barbershop style. We are committed to the highest standards of musical excellence, education, and personal musical growth in a fun and welcoming atmosphere. We have been a chapter of Sweet Adelines International located in DeKalb Illinois, since October of 1985. We began as the Prairie Echoes Chorus and then became the HarmonEssence Chorus in October 2016.

Barbershop is a unique vocal musical form. It is characterized by four-part harmonies sung without accompaniment in a pop/jazz style. The four parts are called by the same names regardless of whether they refer to men's or women's groups. The melody is sung by the Leads while Tenors sing clear, light harmony above the Leads. Basses sing the rich low notes at the bottom of the chord, and the Baritones do vocal gymnastics to sing whatever note is needed to complete the chord. All parts lean into and harmonize with the Leads. What distinguishes Barbershop from other harmonies is its "ringing chords."

Contemporary barbershop singing has become more stylized than in the past. Today's groups are vibrant, calling forth their gospel, blues, and jazz roots. Choreography has been added--from simple gestures and steps to elaborate stage performances--along with glittering costumes. The extent to which these elements are added varies greatly from group to group, but overall, Sweet Adelines are known for their sparkle. A sweet blend of a cappella barbershop harmony is the heartbeat of this nearly 23,000-member worldwide organization. With more than 70 years of barbershop history, Sweet Adelines International provides a legacy of joy and passion for singing to those women who experience the joy of sisterhood and lifelong friendships on the choral risers each week. As one of the largest associations of women singers to date, Sweet Adelines continues to positively impact women's lives and helps them find their voices, build confidence, enhance their vocal abilities, improve leadership and management qualities, and create a lifelong support system of sisterhood and friendship. Education, leadership, music, learning are all integral parts of our organization.
